It looks like a cone but feels like a fruit. Those barbs are not at all sharp.
Can anybody tell me?

John: Can't help you with ID'ing the cone/fruit, but I can say it was great meeting you at Grayson Highlands. This is a terrific site, and I'm enjoying going back and reading your earlier posts. I'm back home in Richmond and headed Sunday to Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay (you'll have to get there on your next cross-country jaunt) for an assignment. -- Bill Lohmann

Robin and Jack returned from Grayson Highlands and report the item pictured is from a rhododendron, which makes sense since you recalled seeing them at the higher elevations around Mt. Rogers and along the Wilson Creek Trail,and rhododendron grow in both places. That said, I've not been able to find a similar image on The Google Machine that identifies it as such.
